The NCAR Scientific Computing Division installed Prospect on November 8, 1999. Named after a zinc, lead, and silver mine in central Colorado, it was a Compaq ES40 cluster.
This distributed shared-memory system had eight nodes – each with four CPUs and four gigabytes of memory – and a peak performance rate of 32 gigaflops.
Due to hardware damage sustained on January 11, 2002, from a water leak that resulted from a frozen sprinkler head, Prospect was decommissioned on February 19, 2002.
