SC23 “Women in HPC” features two CISL staffers

Two members of CISL’s staff are featured in a series of Women’s History Month profiles titled “SuperComputing 2023 Celebrates Thirty-One Women in HPC.”

Sheri Mickelson, a software engineer and group manager in CISL’s Technology Development Division, and Summer Wasson, education and multimedia specialist in the High Performance Computing Division, were recognized for their leadership and achievements in high-performance computing (HPC).

Sheri’s profile on the SC23 site describes her passion for mentoring others, in particular those from underrepresented groups, and how her skills at accelerating code make an impact in the field of climate and weather research: “By accelerating their codes, I accelerate the scientists’ time to discovery. This allows them to explore new areas of science where it wasn’t possible before.

“What motivates me the most is hearing the excitement in a scientist’s voice telling me about the new areas they can research because of my work.”

Summer’s profile was posted on LinkedIn and Facebook. She explained that her job is to “demonstrate all of the systems that come together to make HPC possible, from the plant to the supercomputing floor.

“I have the opportunity to showcase HPC to groups of all ages and there is always something to learn. In my workday I walk visitors through data collection, networking, supercomputing, thermal-dynamic heat exchange systems, and talk about the vast opportunities to explore STEM fields as a career.” Summer also serves as the City of Cheyenne Technology Advisory Council chairwoman.
