Abstract
We expect the IPCC Fifth Assessment (AR5) process will be completed in October 2013. For the next probable IPCC assessment a new round of simulations and science will begin. It is expected that higher resolution model components will be coupled for Earth system simulations. In addition, the treatment of physical processes will be more complex and tightly coupled to other components. Another challenge is that high performance computer systems will be much faster and more difficult to efficiently use. The scientific and technology questions will be what do we gain with higher resolution and how will we achieve the computational challenges.
