Abstract
The international Climate Modeling Inter-comparison Project Phase 5 (CMIP5) is approaching a stable data archive status. One of the tasks of CMIP5 was to produce the global climate model data base to be used in scientific publications for the next IPCC Assessment report. 29 modeling groups with 61 global climate model configurations participated. From the total amount of CMIP5 model output about 2 PB are requested to be published in the Earth System Grid Federation (ESGF). These 2 PB split up in about 5 Mio individual NetCDF data files. The total amount of data as well as the total number of data files set strong data management requirements.
